Mae Whitman opened up about being pansexual in a series of tweets on Monday.

The Good Girls actress currently voices Amity Blight, a lesbian witch on Disney’s animated series The Owl House.

The Owl House has joined the ranks of other shows like Steven Universe and Star vs. the Forces of Evil that are making historic strides in queer animated representation. The series has brought Disney many animation firsts, including the channel’s first bisexual lead character, first nonbinary character, and Whitman’s Amity, Disney’s first major recurring lesbian character, as confirmed by series creator Dana Terrace. The show’s second season premiered in June, featuring the progression of Amity’s romantic relationship with lead character Luz.

Whitman voiced support for her show’s trailblazing storytelling on Twitter, writing: “Just taking a moment to say I am SO proud to be even a small part of a show like The Owl House.”

The actress continued, opening up about her own sexuality and the impact the show would have had on her when she was younger. "Being pansexual myself, I wish I had such incredible characters like Amity and Luz in my life when I was growing up,” Whitman said. “Queer representation is sososo important :,) keep it up world! #TOH.”

In the replies to her tweet, fans of The Owl House responded with support of the 33-year-old actress’ public coming out, sharing messages of love and gratitude for Whitman’s groundbreaking character.

Whitman defined what being pansexual means to her in a follow-up tweet, while also offering resources for fans hoping to learn more about pansexuality.

“I know ppl might be unfamiliar with what pansexual means; for me it means I know I can fall in love with people of all genders," she wrote. Along with a rainbow emoji, Whitman shared links to the Bisexual Resource Center and GLAAD’s Accelerating Bi+ Acceptance site.

"This is the word that fits me best and I’m proud+happy to be part of the Bi+ community :,),” said Whitman.
