Madonna has shared a statement with fans for the first time since being admitted to hospital with a serious bacterial infection.

Sharing the update in a post to her 19 million Instagram followers, accompanied with a selfie, the singer thanked everyone for their "positive energy" and support and gave reassurance that she is now "on the road to recovery".

The star also opened up about exactly what went through her mind when she woke up in the ward.

"Thank you for your positive energy, prayers and words of healing and encouragement. I have felt your love. I'm on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life," she wrote.

"My first thought when I woke up in hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn't want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone."

In June, Madonna endured a several-day stay at an intensive care unit (ICU), before being discharged to recover at home.

"My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I'll be back with you as soon as I can!" she added in the new update.

"The current plan is to reschedule the North American leg of the tour and to begin in October in Europe. I couldn't be more grateful for your care and support.

"Love, M."

Fans and celebrity friends alike flooded the comments with love.

"We love you so much you have never disappointed us," wrote Julia Fox, while Nile Rodgers said, "I love you M. You are one of the strongest persons I’ve ever known."

Meanwhile, one fan commented, "Take all the time you need, Madonna. The most important thing is your good health. We treasure you, your art, and everything else you bring to this world," while another expressed, "Focus on healing! We will all wait for you and the show will be amazing when we can all be together again!"

We're just glad to hear she's doing well.
