Madewell and Monogram Just Made Your New Favorite T-shirt

For most, an evening out means friendly conversation over drinks and splurging on an Uber ride home. But when Madewell creative director Joyce Rose Lee and Jeff Halmos and Lisa Mayock, the husband-wife duo behind graphic-tee brand Monogram, met up for a casual dinner earlier this year, the night became more than your average social call.

“We began talking about our mutual obsession of perfectly worn in graphic tees, old poster art, and ‘70s-food photography,” Lee tells InStyle over email. “Before long we were brainstorming a collection.”

Today, said collection officially debuts with three limited-edition styles—two tees and a sweatshirt—incorporating playful graphics and retro typography. The easygoing designs are naturally a no-brainer complement to jeans, but they’ll feel even more special in less-than-expected pairings: think everything from printed skirts to colorful trousers. “This season I’m gifting these tops to several ladies on my list, all of whom will wear them different ways,” Mayock says. “Seeing how women bring our pieces to life is the most fascinating and inspiring part of the process.”
