My scalp has endured a lot: chemical burns via bleach and dodgy DIY keratin treatments; suffocating, thick layers of hair gel; constant gravitational pull from the 20-inch tape-in extensions I inexpertly apply. Ergo, the skin below my hair is less than healthy. In recent months, it’s been crying out for help, becoming simultaneously greasy and flaky. If this were the case for the skin on my face, I’d turn to balancing face masks, exfoliating products, and soothing essences. The René Furterer Head Spa Purifying Scrub is a clarifying, exfoliating treatment for the skin below your hair. Designed for once-weekly use, it removes product buildup, dead skin cells, and other debris, leaving the scalp feeling fresh and roots looking volumized. Per the brand, the deep-cleansing formula extends the time needed between shampoos — a claim I’ve found to be true — thanks to its effective removal of buildup, excess oil, and other debris that render roots greasy, flat, and in need of frequent washes. Notably, the scrub addresses both oiliness and dryness; a balancing effect that, ultimately, supports a healthier environment for hair growth.
Like all René Furterer products, the scrub relies primarily on naturally derived ingredients; ingredients like sea salt, which functions as a physical exfoliator. On another sensorial note, the product feels as blissful as it smells; sea salt’s satisfying grittiness makes for a mini-massage, furthering the indulgent, spa-like experience. Squeeze the mask directly onto the scalp, when hair is wet, prior to shampooing; then, massage for three minutes using your fingers — or, better yet, a scalp scrubber. Three minutes pass at snail-speed when I’m waiting on other hair products to work, but I’d gladly revel in this scalp scrub for much longer.
