For me, this summer has been about bold-printed dresses and vibrant Barbie pinks, but for fall, I’m in need of a color palette reset. While I love making a statement with bright-colored clothes, I’m officially moving into my minimalist era. But don’t think that because the shades are neutral, the pieces are boring. Elevated basics with interesting details and modern silhouettes make classic pieces like leather jackets and sweater dresses feel new and fresh.
So, to help me achieve the minimalist fall wardrobe of my dreams, I went to my favorite retailer, Nordstrom, to round up eight neutral-colored closet essentials. The list includes Madewell, Topshop, and Levi’s, and prices start at just $55.

Minimalism is all about having that one piece you can rely on and don’t need more of; for me, that's a leather jacket. I’ve been wearing the same deep green leather jacket for over eight years, and it’s unfortunately begun to peel. So I’ve been searching for its replacement, and this Faux Leather Racer Jacket from Levi’s is the one. The design is modern and comes in a warm chocolate brown that I need for my fall rotation.
The racer-style jacket comes in eight colors, including black, brown, and white, and sizes XS through XXL. It’s made from soft faux leather and features a classic slim-straight fit, zipper closure, two side zipper pockets, and decorative zipper detailing at the hem. The jacket also includes a functional buckle that fastens around the neck and an interior lining for added warmth.

If I were to recommend any transitional piece you’ll get nonstop wear out of for several years, it’s a mock-neck sweater. The style goes with everything in a neutral color, making the art of layering unfussy. And in saying this, I’ve already added Madewell’s black and white Mock-Neck Wide-Rib Sweater to my cart because I plan to wear it with everything from jeans to pleated skirts.
The mock-neck top comes in white, black, and green and sizes XS through XXL. It has a classic straight fit with a ribbed texture that allows for a bit of stretch, so you can comfortably pull the mock-neck over your head. The sleeveless design makes it a versatile piece that can easily be layered without added bulkiness.

Growing up, I hated when my mom made me wear trousers, but oh, how the tables have turned. I actually now prefer trousers to jeans because they’re so comfortable and make every outfit look polished — and if you get them in a neutral shade, they’ll go with just about any top in your closet. So it was an automatic checkout when I saw these Open Edit Relaxed-Waist Wide-Leg Trousers — how could I not with their gorgeous silhouette and stunning olive green shade?
The high-waisted trousers also come in black, brown, and navy and sizes XXS through XXL. They have a classic suiting feel with a midweight density that allows them to hold their shape, and a snug fit at the waist that falls to a roomy wide-cut fit at the hem. I’ve always been a huge fan of sweater dresses because they’re great transitional pieces that always look timeless, so they’ll never go out of style. While I’m in my minimalist era, I want to buy pieces that I can wear for many years and easily mix and match with other essentials. .That’s why I plan to add this neutral-colored Oversize Sweater Dress from Topshop to my fall capsule collection; you can truly never have too many sweater dresses.
