TikTok creators are showing off their extensive journal collections with help from a past Fiona Apple interview.

A clip from a 1996 interview with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple has resurfaced on the platform. Now, a 17-second soundbite, which captures Apple talking about her “radical sensitivity,” is being used by Gen Z-ers to show off their curated journal collections.

“I’m such an incredibly, stupidly sensitive person, that everything that happens to me, I experience it really intensely,” the “Tidal” singer says in one of her early interviews. “I feel everything very deeply. And when you feel things deeply and you think about things a lot and you think about how you feel, you learn a lot about yourself. And when you know yourself, you know life.”

In their study, which was published in Advances in Psychiatric Treatment in 2005, Karen Baikie, a consultant clinical psychologist, and Kay Wilhelm, a researcher director at the University of New South Wales, found that “long-term benefits of expressive writing” included:

  • Fewer stress-related visits to the doctor

  • Improved immune system functioning

  • Feeling of greater psychological well-being

  • Reduced depressive symptoms before examinations

  • Fewer post-traumatic intrusion and avoidance symptoms

On July 2, 21-year-old Aoife (@babugork), used the sound to show off their wide array of carefully curated journals, all of which had personalized covers.

“I am sensitive but that is ok,” reads their caption.

Among the benefits of journaling is that it can create space for us to process negative emotions or traumatic experiences.

“Oftentimes we approach our thoughts as facts which can get us into trouble when we believe our most anxiety-provoking thoughts without hesitation,” Dr. Sabrina Romanoff, a New York City-based psychologist, told Today of the objectivity journaling can provide. “The process of reading a biased thought outside of your mind can provide an alternative outlook and [help you] see things more clearly.”

Baikie and Wilhelm corroborate this in their study too: “The subsequent suggestion that the beneficial effect of expressive writing is the development of a coherent narrative over time, reflecting increasing cognitive processing of the experience, is consistent with the literature on traumatic memory and trauma treatment.”

‘Experiencing emotions is what gives us meaning in life’

With more than 672,200 views and 172,900 likes, Aoife’s journal collection has captured the attention of other TikTokers, many of whom are in awe of how many she’s filled.

“I thought I was the only one who buys completely different-looking journals each time lol!!” @avitalthehuman wrote, to which Aoife replied, “I loveeeee buying a new one for a new era it just makes it so special and sentimental hehehe change is good sometimes.”

“i always wondered if its normal to have written so many journals and im glad to discover that it is its like our own personal book series,” @roci_wolf commented.

“Experiencing emotions is what gives us meaning in life. its the best thing a human experiences. You have the privilege to feel it fully,” @lorisxsmjl wrote.

Other TikTok creators who’ve resonated with Apple’s declaration of being an “incredibly, stupid, sensitive person” have also used the soundbite to highlight their completed journals.

Vanely Martinez (@vanedoesthings), on June 30, went through her own towering collection.

“if it happened, i wrote it down, she writes.

“I want to start journaling but I’m always slumped on what to write about even though it’s just my life,” @papermoon13 commented on Martinez’s video. To this, Martinez suggested, “start with free writing! (write down any thought that comes to mind) In the morning this really helps for mental clarity and then you’ll start to notice what you *actually* want to write about.”

On July 18, Oriana (@0r1anaaa) flipped through pages from her journals, revealing many of her sketches.

“The thought of someone in some distant future reading these and peeking at your soul just sent me down a spiral,” @dayskyy wrote in Oriana’s comments. Replied Oriana, “hehehe dw they’re kept safely.”
