Remember when the whole “self-care” movement was brand new and there were endless infographics on Instagram and Pinterest telling us to meditate and take bubble baths? Well, I tried most of those self-care practices (it’s from the internet, so it has to be legit, right?) and they were so, so stupid. I only felt worse about myself when I couldn’t sleep for eight full hours or learn a new hobby over a single weekend — so much that my mental health actually deteriorated because of those lists (which are cheugy, even to a millennial).

Instead, I adopted a much healthier coping mechanism: spending more money than I make on luxury beauty products. The serotonin levels in my brain skyrocket when I look at the beauty collection I’ve curated; it’s just more satisfying than “learning to knit.” Treating myself to little luxury gifts as often as possible is my therapy — and I let myself indulge even more around the holidays. Though my salary and the NYC apartment rental market doesn’t allow for me to drop a couple grand on a new designer handbag, I can still get my finer things fix through beauty products. So if you’re a beauty snob like me, I recommend treating yourself to these under-$50 luxuries ahead of the holidays — because let’s be real: Money can buy happiness.

Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer

Quick disclaimer: when you start to build a nice beauty collection, your friends and family are going to help themselves to it. A friend of mine used my Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer on her new wrist tattoo to try to hide it before a dinner with her family. She later reported back to me that not only had the concealer obscured her tat, it stayed in place all night. I’m not surprised though; this correcting concealer is my go-to after sleepless nights when my under-eyes are dark and puffy. It stays in place throughout full work days and doesn’t look cakey, which is probably why it earned a spot on InStyle’s list of the best concealers. And, most importantly, it prevents family drama — a one-stop shop, baby!

Yves Saint Laurent Mini Black Opium and Libre Eau de Parfum Set

I was first introduced to YSL’s Black Opium about 10 years ago when a friend offered me a spritz while getting ready for a college party. To this day, I still have no idea why she wasted a couple sprays on such an unsophisticated occasion, but it worked out for me — I found a signature scent that I’ve continued to wear almost daily, and (thankfully) to more refined occasions. This sultry perfume has a sweet, musky scent; it gives off an air of desirability and sex, all while staying subtle and elegant.

Chanel Le Gel Coat Nail Polish

I recently wrote about this gel polish, but it’s just such a winner that I couldn’t leave it off this list — so I’ll give you the SparkNotes version of my lengthier review: It doubles as a top coat for at-home paint jobs and protective shield to gel manicure-damaged nails. I swear by this stuff, and you will, too, once you see how much it can save you on trips to the nail salon.

Tatcha the Serum Stick Treatment and Touch-Up Balm

The things I would do to flood my beauty cabinet with Tatcha products… wouldn't be allowed to be published on this site. Everyone has a brand that works best for their own skin type, but Tatcha seems to be universally loved; in particular, the Serum Stick, which is one of the only treatments that doesn’t make my under-eyes sting. It can be used both before and after makeup application, but I like to cake it on before for an even, eye-brightening effect.

I could write about every one of these products ad nauseam, but my editor would want to pull her eyes out if she had to read any more of this. Check out a few of my other must-haves for the perfect self-pamper.
