Lynchburg Parks and Rec. searching for lifeguards for summer 2024

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — As many get ready to hang up their hoodies and pull out their swimming gear, the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department is putting safety first.

The department is looking to hire lifeguards for the summer season. Currently, the department has about 15 lifeguards returning from last summer. However, another 15 lifeguards are needed to meet the pool needs.

“It can definitely be a challenge getting people on board, but it’s a really fun job, especially for someone who is in high school. It’s a really convenient job for a college student who is coming back for the summer,” said Hannah Rathje, the Community Recreation Supervisor with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation.

But before diving in, all lifeguards must obtain their lifeguard certification through the American Red Cross. Rathje says if you are a new or returning lifeguard, the department will pay for the certification.

The Lynchburg Parks and Recreations Department is offering a $100 sign-on bonus for all the guards. Rathje added they will also offer a retention bonus.

“For every week that you work 12 or more hours, we are actually going to give you a $15 bonus. You have to work 12 or more hours to get that bonus each week, but we will give that to you at the end of the summer,” said Rathje.

The Miller Park Pool is set to open on Memorial Day. The pool features a children’s area, a twisting water slide, a high dive, and a kiddie area with a mushroom waterfall. Each year the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department hosts several events throughout the summer including “glow swim,” a cardboard boat race, and more.
