I am a health nut. This is not so much a brag as it is a confession. It is not particularly chic to favor a 5 p.m. macrobiotic meal over late-night French fries—at least not in Manhattan. But it does qualify me to obsess over Sakara’s Detox Drops.

I have tried a lot of supplements: wheat grass, bee pollen, maca, mushroom powder, etc. etc. Most don’t make it past the first few weeks before I deem that they aren’t really doing anything. As a result, my daily supplement routine is limited; few things can compete with the holy trinity of sleep, water, and vegetables.

Sakara, named for the Sanskrit concept that “thoughts become meaning,” is an organic meal delivery program that expanded to supplements and snacks. Stuck at home and tired of my own cooking, I worked my way through their various bars and powders. Truthfully, they are all good, annoyingly good even when put in the category of “fancy snacks that I have to order online.” But I have become utterly devoted to the Detox Drops—as of writing I am waiting on the delivery of my sixth bottle.

The Detox Drops are chlorophyll drops, chlorophyll being the compound in plants that make them green. Spoiler alert, I am not a scientist so I am not going to delve into scientific studies here, but every cell in our body relies on the oxygen and glucose found in chlorophyll. The drops are an emerald hue and drinking them in a glass of water boosts your greens intake and tastes like an herbal tea. It is a lovely way to end a dinner as a satisfying night cap (I even put them in sparkling water if I am feeling fancy) and I’ve seen noticeable improvements in my digestion and skin. Everything seems to work a little bit better, my skin is more glowy and my energy is perked up. One bottle lasts at least a month and two bottles come in a pack—you can also mix with Sakara’s mineral-rich Beauty Drops if you are feeling extra—so among all of my health habits, this is on the affordable side.

One of the basic premises of Sakara is that you can boost your health not by subtracting things like sugar, chocolate, and alcohol, but by adding things like fresh vegetables so that there is less space for the bad stuff. “The Standard American Diet is lacking in essential micronutrients, vitamins and minerals,” says Sakara founders Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise. “We focuses on nutrient density and abundance, ensuring you’re getting enough fiber-rich foods, leafy greens, plant protein, satiating healthy fats, antioxidants and polyphenols, and water-rich foods. This is the winning combination for your body to feel that it is getting everything it needs to thrive.”

I suspect this is the real winning secret behind the Detox Drops, the benefits of chlorophyll seem amazing, but the appeal of drenching my cells with a lush emerald-green potion crowds out thoughts of another cookie or a glass of wine. And on nights when I have had plenty of both, capping my excess with a large glass of chlorophyll water feels downright virtuous, a clean reversal on my previous indiscretions. And if you can bottle that feeling up and drink it, well, why wouldn’t you?
