Lupita Nyong’o Wrote a Children’s Book with a Powerful Message & Honestly, Adults Should Read It Too

Lupita Nyong’o is an Oscar-winning actress, an activist and come next year, she’ll be a published children’s book author.

The Star Wars: The Last Jedi star’s first children’s book, Sulwe, drops January 2019, and it comes with a truly important message that will resonate with kids and adults.

Sulwe, which means “star” in Nyongo’s native language (Luo), tells the story of a 5-year-old Kenyan girl who feels self-conscious because her skin tone is darker than the rest of her family’s. She tries to lighten it, but, after an unforgettable journey through the night stars, ultimately learns to appreciate her beauty and individuality.

The Black Panther star told The New York Times she felt compelled to write the story because of her own struggle with embracing her complexion. She has since become an inclusive beauty activist.

Though Nyong’o wrote this book for children ages 5 to 7, its lesson in self-love is something we can all benefit from.
