Lupita Nyong’o’s Statement Lip May Be the Secret to Brightening Up Your Fall Look

For Lupita Nyong’o, no look is complete without a shock of retina-burning color. And seen out in New York City today promoting her new children’s book Sulwe, the Kenyan-Mexican actress not only wore a fluorescent yellow jacket and dress by Toccin, but accented its super-bright shade with a bold lip color.

With her buoyant afro swept back by a prismatic, multi-strand headband, Nyong'o looked particularly fresh-faced today, her glowing complexion punctuated by a stamp of vivid fuchsia lipstick—another nod to the ‘80s, says her makeup artist Nick Barose. “We did a fun pop of color on the lips to contrast with her electric yellow outfit,” he explains of landing on the rich berry shade, which also happened to match her strappy knotted sandals. To create the color, Barose first stained her lips with Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge lipstick in orange-red Impatience, then topped it off with L’Absolu Gloss in hot pink Rose Lancôme. With autumn fever setting in, it's only natural to gravitate toward deeper, darker shades, but Nyong’o makes the case for fearlessly embracing a jolt of unexpected color.
