Lupita Nyong’o’s Liquid Gold Lips Just Shut Down the CFDA Awards Red Carpet

The "Black Panther" actress’s liquid gold lips shut down the 2018 CFDA Awards red carpet.

Forever a red carpet beauty rule-breaker, Lupita Nyong’o pulled out all the stops to look more luminous—and golden—than ever before at the 2018 CFDA Awards.

Wearing a custom, thigh-skimming Versace bustier gown and matching plume-embroidered choker, her hair smoothed and woven back into a voluminous ponytail with plait detail at the base, the Black Panther star captured attention with her pillowy, liquid gold mouth. Makeup artist Nick Barose, who says he found inspiration from vampy female villains on screen such as Empress Phoenix in the 2006 Chinese epic Curse of the Golden Flower, swiped a slick of Lancôme’s L'absolu Gloss in shimmery deep bronze Vertige, then pressed metallic "Kissed By Gold" pigment into the center of the lips, blending it to gradiated, oil-slicked effect. With her luminous glow, matte winged liner, and party-ready pout, Nyong’o not only tapped into the gilded flashes seen on the fall runway runway (Chanel! Thom Browne! Comme des Garçons!), but made the case for more-is-more makeup as only she can.
