Inspired by the exploits of Arsène Lupin, the eponymous character in French author Maurice LeBlanc’s iconic novels, Netflix’s Lupin follows Assane Diop (Omar Sy) as he sets out to avenge his father, whose legacy was tarnished by a wealthy family. But unlike the books, which were set in the early 20th century, the show takes place in modern times.

Part 1 of the global hit show remains as the streaming platform’s No. 3 most popular non-English language series of all time, behind only Squid Game Season 1 and Money Heist Part 4. Lupin has gone on to nab nominations for Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards, both for best series and best performance for Sy.

“The character had to be a Frenchman from today,” Sy told Rolling Stone in an April 2021 feature about the decision to recontextualize the Lupin character in the modern era. “That’s why we have a Black guy coming from African descent living in the projects. It’s a new face of France. All of that comes with new topics: How do people see this guy? How do you live in a country when you’re a guy like that? How do you earn money?”

Part 1 opened with Assane, relying on his wits and charisma as the sole son of a Senegalese immigrant, embarking on a quest for righteous vengeance, getting back at the powerful Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre), who framed his father Babakar for the theft of a diamond necklace 25 years ago. Subsequent installments of the series expound upon Assane’s intricate heists, as well as his growing popularity—and infamy, depending on who you ask—in Parisian society.

Read on for all the details surrounding the French caper’s Part 3 return following a two-year absence, including who's in the cast, when the show will release and what happens in the trailer.

Will there be a Lupin Part 3?

Yes! Lupin was renewed for a third installment shortly following the premiere and continued success of Part 2. The series is one of Netflix’s most popular international hits, becoming the first French-language show to hit No. 1 on the streamer’s weekly Top 10 rankings in several countries. Production on the third part of the caper series began in November 2021 in Paris, hitting a brief snag in late February of last year when 20 individuals robbed the set of $333,000 worth of equipment.

Where did Lupin Part 2 leave off?

It’s been two years since Part 2’s premiere date, in June 2021, and it’s safe to say we all need a refresher. The Part 2 finale saw justice delivered to Hubert Pellegrini, whose crimes were exposed to both the public and police. Assane, after being smuggled into Paris’ Théâtre du Châtelet, where the Pellegrini family was hosting a concert, managed to eke out a confession from Hubert at knifepoint. The subsequent recording, where Hubert admits to Babakar’s framing, the murders of journalist Fabienne (Anne Benoît) and his henchman Leonard (Adama Niane) and Raoul’s kidnapping, is sent to Youssef (Soufiane Guerrab), who arrests him and corrupt police commissioner Dumont (Vincent Garanger) with the help of Captain Laugier (Vincent Londez) and Lieutenant Belkacem (Shirine Boutella).

While Hubert’s men attempt to capture Assane, the latter is able to get to the stage and denounce Hubert. In the episode’s final moments, Assane briefly reconciles with Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) and Raoul (Etan Simon), apologizing for his deeds and telling them to stay away for their safety. As the police approach to arrest him, Assane steals off into the night on a speedboat.

What is the Lupin Part 3 release date?

The Netflix series’ third installment will premiere Oct. 5.

What is Lupin Part 3 about?

The thriller-drama series picks up with Assane adjusting to life far away from his wife and son. But, according to Part 3’s logline, “Assane can't stand it any longer and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposal: leave France and start a new life elsewhere.” However, Lupin’s past is just around the corner, and the upcoming installment promises an “unexpected return” that will foil his plans. Youssef Guédira, played by Soufiane Guerrab, is a fellow Lupin enthusiast who combines his book expertise and detective skills to track Assane’s next steps. In addition to Lupin, Guerrab has appeared in the action-crime films District 13: Ultimatum, A Brighter Tomorrow and Burn Out.
