While household cats come in all different shapes and sizes, one thing most in common are their names. According to MentalFloss, "Luna" topped 2019's list as the most popular cat name, which now marks the moniker's third year in the number one position. The other names to round out the top 10 were Bella, Kitty, Oliver, Lucy, Leo, Charlie, Shadow, Simba, and Milo.

The Banfield Pet Hospital, which is the largest general veterinarian practice in the world, gathered the results to determine the most popular names by consulting their database of over 500,000 cats. Those names were not the only trendy ones, however. Movies, television shows, and famous figures helped inspire cat owners to give their new pets unique names this year.

The popularity of Game of Thrones prompted feline parents to name 41 percent more cats "Sansa" this year; around 27 percent more cats were also dubbed "Jon Snow" in 2019. About 19 percent and 12 percent more cats were named after Toy Story's leading characters Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively. The royal family inspired some cat names, too. Over 40 percent more cats adopted the name Archie after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's son was born.

While pet names can appear to be wide-ranging, Kate Jaffe, a trend expert for Rover.com shared that monikers are often based on an owner's interests in life. "The names we give our pets provide a peek into our passions, aspirations, happy places, and guilty pleasures, reinforcing what we at Rover know to be true: our pets are as unique as the names we lovingly bestow upon them," she said in a press release.
