Lululemon’s Shirts Are Attacking the Women Who Wear Them

Poor, poor Lululemon. Just when the exorbitantly priced athleticwear brand presumably thought its mass product recalls were a thing of the past (who could forget the Great See-Through Yoga Pants Debacle of 2013?), it’s been hit with another. Or, rather, its customers have been. Literally!

According to CNN, Lululemon is now recalling more than 300,000 of its women’s tops because wearers have complained that the items’ drawstrings — which are around the neck area and feature hard tips — have painfully whipped them in the noggin.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that, “when the elastic draw cord with a hard tip in the hood or around the neck area is pulled or caught on something and released, it can snap back, impact the face area and result in injury.“ So far, there have been at least "seven reported incidents, resulting in seven injuries to the face and eye.” Ouch.

An example of the kind of drawstrings Lululemon is recalling.

In Lulu’s home country of Canada, where 185,000 of the hazardous $75 to $260 tops reportedly reside, customers have been asked to “stop wearing the tops with the elastic draw cord and either remove the draw cord or contact Lululemon Athletica to request a new, non-elastic draw cord with written instructions on how to replace the draw cord.”

Said a Lulu spokesperson, “Our main priority is ensuring the product works for our guests, and we believe this is the necessary proactive action. We are committed to making our product right for our guests and regret any inconvenience this may have caused them."

The whole situation sounds pretty unpleasant and very un-zen. Methinks all parties involved could probably use a little mind-clearing, deep breathing yoga sesh right about now… this time, with some soft cotton, cordless tees and some very opaque (and very expensive) leggings. It’s the Lululemon dream.
