It wouldn’t be a Bryan family birthday without a little comedy.

Country superstar Luke Bryan was all jokes in his tribute to his mom LeClaire on her 76th birthday this week. The crooner subtly roasted the matriarch on Instagram with a zoomed-in photo and a teasing remark.

“Happy birthday Mama. I love you. Beer, cigarette, and fishing money coming soon. Ha,” Luke captioned the picture.

But it was LeClaire who got the last word. She replied to her son’s impish post with a promise to straighten out his behavior the next time they’re together.

“I will tend to you Wednesday the 18th,” she quipped in the comments. “Much love.”

Despite their penchant for teasing each other, the Bryan family has been bound tight by tragedy. Some might say their greatest strength is their ability to keep laughing despite it all.

In 1996, when Luke was 20, his older brother Chris was killed in a car accident. His older sister Kelly passed away unexpectedly in May 2007. After Kelly’s husband Ben died in 2014, Luke and his wife Caroline adopted their three children.

“It forever altered my mother’s belief systems,” the American Idol judge explained in a 2018 interview with Billboard. “I’ll get random calls from her when she’s having bad days. One day, she’s missing my brother, and one day, she’s missing my sister, and one day, she wants to be around me more, because I’m all she’s got left.”

“We give Mama the benefit of the doubt on stuff,” Luke added. “She has suffered a lot of pain as a mother, losing two children.”

Happy birthday LeClaire! Here’s to many more happy days ahead.
