Lucy Hale's Smiley Face Nail Art is the Perfect Mood-Boosting Manicure

If you had to use one word to describe the vibe of 2020 thus far, cheerful would not be that word. Every facet of our wellness has been tested by an unprecedented health pandemic that has changed our lives in unwelcome ways, while a wave of activism demanding racial equity is pushing to change our lives in long-overdue ways. This year has been trying, inspiring, anguished, hopeful, and devastating. But despite all of those adjectives that decidedly aren't cheerful, it's important to remember to find some joy — even in little, frivolous things — as we work together toward a healthier, egalitarian future.

A perfect example: Lucy Hale's latest manicure.

On Thursday, July 2, Hale posted a Boomerang to her Instagram Stories showing her new nail art. The sheer, pink base coat on her oval nails are topped off with the palest yellow dots that have been turned into smiley faces with tiny black eyes and mouths. The clip is aptly set to the tune of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

Hale tagged her nail artist, Thuy Nguyen, who shared the video on her own Intagram Stories and added, "Smilesssss all around with my angel @lucyhale. Find happiness wherever you can and hold it close to you."

It's an especially meaningful message for Hale, who shared some personal and professional news with fans on Thursday. In an emotional three-minute IGTV video, the actor tells her fans that her show, Katy Keene, has not been picked up for a second season. As she thanks those she's worked with and those who watched the show, she can be seen wiping away her tears with the smiley-face manicure.

And while that manicure may not solve any problems, it serves as a reminder that it's OK to treat yourself to some self-care and silliness as you recharge and return to the challenges at hand.
