Lucy Hale Talks About Stress Sweat and Spring Beauty Must-Haves

When you think of Lucy Hale, your first thoughts might be something related to her enviable eyebrows, or the fact that there's basically no beauty look she can't pull off (metallic hair tattoos, anyone?). However, one thing you might not know: the actor is a proud Outfit Repeater, regardless of what a certain, now-iconic Lizzie McGuire scene may deem as a fashion faux pas.

But that means that Lucy often has to keep her clothes as fresh as possible, which is where her new partnership with Degree comes in. Teen Vogue met up with the star — who has a brand-new TV show, Life Sentence on the air, BTW — to chat about all things beauty, brows, and yep...stress sweat.

Teen Vogue: What has it been like to work with Degree? How did the partnership come about?

Lucy Hale: My whole wardrobe is black and white, and I love re-wearing items and having staple pieces that I travel with. It made sense to partner with Degree, because its UltraClear deodorant is all about re-wearing the stuff that you want to wear, and not having to worry about stains and marks. I think there's a misconception that people in the public eye don't re-wear things, but that is completely false. I do it all the time, and I think that everyone should do that.

TV: Did you have a relationship with Degree growing up, before this partnership came about?

LH: I can remember going to my local Walgreens or Target with my mom and getting these essentials that I needed. I've always loved Degree. I've always gravitated toward their packaging. It all smells great, and the dry spray is new, and really fun to use. I've been a fan of their stuff for a long time.

TV: Growing up, shopping for a first deodorant can feel like a coming-of-age beauty experience.

LH: Yes! Like, I need a bra, and I need deodorant. I'm a woman!

TV: I'll be the first to admit that stress sweat is extremely real. How do you deal? A good deodorant is obviously essential...

LH: Definitely. I'm the same way. I freak out, and I literally forget to breathe. I know I'm nervous if I'm not breathing. If I'm freaking out or whatever it is, I'll go to the bathroom and just breathe normally, and that sort of just gets me through it. Otherwise, fake it 'til you make it. Fake that you're OK, because I do that a lot, too.

TV: On the topic of beauty, how do you use glam to help transform into a character? Are there any things that you use – either fragrance or makeup – that help you connect to a new role?

LH: There's something so great about beauty that actually makes you feel like a different person sometimes. Like with [Pretty Little Liars character] Aria, obviously, she was really creative with her wardrobe, and even with her makeup too. Out of the four [main characters], I think makeup was her thing. At one point, she even had pink stripes in her hair, so that can definitely make you feel differently. But [my Life Sentence character] Stella — I wanted her to have a signature haircut. So, I took [my hair] a little bit shorter, because I thought she just seemed so youthful and full of life. I wanted her to have a haircut that sort of represented that.

TV: What drew you to the role of Stella?

LH: It was mainly the story. I thought that this story of this girl and of this family had a lot of heart and was the show that people needed right now. I thought that she's, to play such a strong yet confused and lost female lead, I think that it goes to show you that you don't always have to have it together. You don't always have to know who you are to be okay. [In the] majority of the show, she is just sort of going through the motions, trying to figure out what path she wants to take. I love Stella’s sense of humor about life, and I thought the show was just really cute, and really funny, and it was really well written.

TV: Spring is right around the corner — do you have any beauty must-haves for the season?

LH: I love a good tinted moisturizer, because foundation can be too much, but sometimes you need a little help. I love, Laura Mercier makes really great ones, but Neutrogena makes really great ones as well. They also make this gentle cleanser in the blue bottle is sort of like a classic, and I remember the first time I went to a dermatologist, they told me about it. I use that, and micellar water, and also do a bunch of face masks and stuff.

TV: As far as beauty trends go, is there anything for spring that you're particularly excited about?

LH: I’m looking forward to certain pastels are coming back — monochromatic or tonal looks, like yellow, and there's this neon green that I saw ... I feel like neons were just in style, too, so it's weird that's coming back so soon, but it'll be fun to change it up a bit.

TV: What is the best beauty hack or lesson or tip that you've learned?

LH: It's kind of basic, but I think just taking care of your skin, because it all sort of starts there. I always feel most confident when I am taking care of myself and taking care of my skin. Everyone's different, but find a routine that works for you and just stay consistent with it. I actually look forward to my nightly routine. It actually gets me excited.

TV: Your brows are such a beauty signature of yours. What is your secret to maintaining them?

LH: I don't do a lot with them. I go see Kelly Baker. She'll trim them for me and sort of shape them up, and then I won't see her for six months, and I let them just grow in.

But I have my favorite [products], like Dior, they make a really good thin, fine pencil, and Anastasia [Brow Gel]. I just brush them up and go.
