Lucy Hale Says She Auditioned for "Rent: Live"

And she wants to do a musical in the near future.

Lucy Hale is getting ready to celebrate New Year's Eve in New Orleans as the host of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest for the Central Time Zone kickoff — and as she spoke to Parade about her career plans for 2019, she also revealed that she almost made an appearance in the upcoming musical Rent: Live.

Earlier this year, Lucy explained to Coveteur that she "had to take a step back" from her musical career because of the stress and anxiety associated with touring and performing live. When asked by Parade if live television musicals like Rent might be a good middle ground for her, she showed she's already one step ahead of the game. "I actually auditioned for the Rent that they’re doing right now," she said. "I’ve auditioned for a couple of them, and I’ve gotten close, and then things just didn’t work out. So, yes, I would definitely love to do that."

She definitely has the range, and we would love to see Lucy playing a character that allows her to use her stellar singing voice — maybe as the young reporter Katherine Plumber in Newsies or Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz? And while she didn't mention what role in Rent she auditioned for, we could definitely picture her belting out "Take Me Or Leave Me" as Maureen. "I think at some point, it’ll work out in some way, shape, or form, but I love music, and I think that if I can find a way to utilize it through acting, I think that that more works for where I’m at in life right now," she added.

In the meantime, she's looking forward to her upcoming rom-com A Nice Girl Like You, which follows along as her shy character decides to push herself out of her comfort zone to prove to her boyfriend that she's not so timid after all. The 29-year-old actor also told Parade that she'll be traveling outside the country in January to begin filming the thriller Fantasy Island, adapted from the 1980s television show with the same name.

Hopefully, there'll still be time in there for her to reunite with Shay Mitchell and her PLL fam to watch the premiere of The Perfectionists and — fingers crossed — possibly make a guest appearance as Aria on the show. And, of course, she told Parade that she'll definitely tune in to watch Rent: Live on January 27, which will star Vanessa Hudgens and Jordan Fisher. "I think that they found a really good cast, and I’m excited to see what they do with it," she said.
