Sad news for Katy Keene fans: The Riverdale spin-off is not coming back for a second season. Lucy Hale, who plays Katy on The CW dramedy, posted a video discussing the cancellation with her fans.

“I’ve had to do this a couple times just ’cause I was a blubbering mess and y’all don’t want to see that,” she admitted. “I’ve kind of struggled all day with what I wanted to say about this or if I shouldn’t say anything…nothing felt right.”

She understandably started crying on camera, saying that “it will take some time to get over.” The series centered on Katy’s aspirations of becoming a fashion designer in New York City. (Think Sex and the City meets The Bold Type.) Of course, she was in desperate need of a partner in crime, which is why Ashleigh Murray came in to reprise her role of Josie McCoy. Fans will remember Ashleigh as one of the original members of the Riverdale crew. Sadly, their star power wasn’t enough to boost ratings.

The silver lining is that we can still watch Katy and Josie on HBO Max, which is currently airing the show’s first season. And there’s some hope that Katy Keene could get picked up elsewhere.

“I think that sometimes things just don’t work out and maybe it was just not the right time for it, I don’t know, I’m a little confused,” Lucy continued. “The show is not coming back and that sucks, but I’ll hold my head high and who knows what I’ll do next.”
