Lucy Boynton's Glam Squad Shares the Secrets Behind Her Jaw-Dropping Red-Carpet Beauty Looks

Lucy Boynton may not be a household name in the U.S. just yet, but after an acclaimed performance in the award-amassing Bohemian Rhapsody, it seems delightfully inevitable. However, it's not just her undeniable talent that has drawn more eyes to the 25-year-old English actor. In just a handful of red-carpet appearances this award-show season, Boynton has made her mark as a burgeoning style star and, thanks to a few of the most talented makeup and hair pros in the industry, the latest beauty It Girl.

Makeup artist Jo Baker has been working with Boynton for about a year, but we truly sat up and took notice of their partnership when the U.K. television star turned U.S. film ingenue arrived at the 2019 Golden Globes. There was a collective gasp among Allure's digital editors when we saw Boynton's eye makeup, which took the graphic look in a new direction by softening it with blended edges and neutral colors.

"I went for a look that creates interest and attention yet is totally wearable: soft, complementary beige, caramel, and toffee tones with uber-feminine shadow shaping for something totally unique," Baker tells Allure. The idea was born of Boynton's golden Céline dress, which gave off a glamorous '70s vibe like that of Jerry Hall. "I etched an exaggerated high crease like a rainbow on Lucy's lid to create an illusion of a bigger, stretched eye. Using soft tones and lots of blending is what kept this looking dreamy." Baker told her Instagram followers that she used "heaps of mascara" and Chanel's Stylo Ombre Et Contour, a stick that can be used as both a liner and an eye shadow.

Three's a trend, and after the dazzling looks Baker did on Boynton for the Golden Globes, Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards, and Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society Awards, it became apparent that the London-based makeup artist makes a point of keeping Boynton's eyes the center of attention. "I love Lucy's eyes so much," Baker tells Allure. "She has the most magical natural lashes, so playing up her eyes is always my priority."

For the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society Awards, Boynton's dress — this time Prada, with a silver chevron pattern — once again served as the initial inspiration for Baker's makeup idea. She had Boynton stare straight forward and, using a tiny liner brush, applied stripes of soft gray gel eyeliner to her upper lid area and brow bone so they would show in the gaps between her lashes. "I added silver glitter on top of the liner stripes to make it feel like fairy-dust fireworks," Baker tells Allure. "The look appears magical and, again, wearable, and it doesn’t overpower the dress or hair."

There's a good reason that while Boynton's eye makeup is often a focal point, it doesn't blind onlookers to her gorgeous hairstyles: Baker often finds herself working with hairstylist Jenny Cho — they were paired up for both the Golden Globes and the L.A. Online Film Critics Society Awards — and their partnership comes naturally. "Working with Jenny Cho is a match made in heaven for me. She just gets it," Baker says. "We want our girls to always look and feel cool, confident, and modern, so when working with Lucy, we fully discuss the looks for hair and makeup together and merge our ideas to complement each others' visions."

Cho echoes Baker when talking about the look-prep process. "It’s always a collaboration between Lucy, the stylist, makeup artist, and hair," Cho tells Allure. "We talk about a look that we want to channel. [It's a] conversation that always happens amongst all of us to create a look that is cohesive, so we’re all on the same page."

In just the last few weeks, Cho has become a hero to those who have chin-length hair, proving that a bob like Lucy's is far from a one-trick pony. "Changing up the texture is one of the easiest ways to switch things up with a flat iron, curling iron, or diffuser to get a bend or wave into it," Cho says, adding that you can also pull a bob up into a knot or half-up knot, wear it super straight, change up the part, try a wet look or matte finish, add braids, or accessorize it. "It's endless what you can do with a bob." Her favorite products to use on Lucy's hair? Suave Firm Control Boosting Mousse, Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist, and Oribe Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream.

With a few more major events left in award-show season, there are still plenty of Lucy Boynton looks to eagerly await, and her glam team is just as excited to make them happen as we are to see them. "I am really grateful to have a muse who trusts me, wants to play, and has total confidence in her team. That she is open-minded and not fearful about makeup is a total dream," Baker says. "We all want her to shine bright."
