Luar Re-examines 'Metrosexuality' for Fall 2024
Remember "metrosexuals"? Luar's latest collection, "Deceptionista," explores this now-outdated (or is it?) term and Creative Director Raul Lopez's own relationship with it as a queer man. The resulting Fall 2024 assortment verges on both autobiography and cultural critique.
"Metrosexuality is not just a label or a look — it was a trapdoor to acceptance, a way for [Lopez] to hide his sexuality while growing up," show notes read. "Assuming the role of a 'Deceptionista,' he was able to deceive, shade and ultimately transcend. As society embraces a softer masculine aesthetic again, Lopez points out the irony of the Decepionista. It's no longer just the metrosexual man doing the deceiving, but it's society retreating on its own heteronormative programming,"
The term "metrosexual" was coined in 1994 to describe an urban man who has a strong aesthetic, regardless of his sexuality. Lopez aims to reveal how the word's meaning has changed over the years, both to society and to him — an interesting undertaking given Luar's consistent gender-fluid ethos. Looks in the collection thus don't forcibly or predictably mix gendered aesthetics; instead, they each embody a sense of confidence and coolness, regardless of the wearer's gender. It's apparent in everything from shiny, black, leather suiting to feather-trim jackets and ostrich maxi skirts.
Luar signatures like exaggerated shoulders, sheer tops and its beloved Ana handbag are present and sure to please loyal customers. New accessories are alluring, too, like the jet pack-esque backpacks and gloves that look more like fur-covered oven mitts. Fall 2024 marks the debut of a new Luar Basics line, including five "seasonless" styles (a hoodie, sweatpants, leggings and two T-shirts) all priced less than $500. The collection also features looks in collaboration with Moose Knuckles, kicking off a multi-season partnership that'll combine Luar designs with the the Canadian brand's expertise in luxury and technical outerwear. Jointly made pieces include the Ana bag in a puffer material, a parka with a detachable Mongolian sheepskin shawl and more.
Of course, the Fall 2024 show's biggest headline was its front row: Beyoncé joined mom Tina Knowles and sister Solange, in support of Daniel "Julez" Smith Jr., who made his debut on the runway (look three).
