LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has something special planned for the people who helped her get to where she is today.

In a recent interview with The Advocate's Jan Risher, Mulkey revealed that she has invited all of her previous basketball coaches, from eighth grade through college, to attend the Tigers’ national championship ring ceremony on November 9.

"We're going to drop the banner and everyone will get their national championship rings," she said. "This summer, while the rings were being ordered, I was thinking that I would like to personally buy every coach that coached me a national championship ring."

"I can be sweet when I wanna be," she joked.

Mulkey, who grew up in Tickfaw, Louisiana, explained why it occurred to her to make this kind of gesture at LSU and not while she was at Baylor, where she won three national championships. The 61 year old told Risher that everyone who coached her, except one, are still living—and they all live in the state of Louisiana.

“Well, it's Louisiana. I've said it many times, I'm back home, I want to do something at LSU and for our state, and I think we've done that,” Mulkey said. “But I also want to acknowledge and show appreciation to those who put me in that head coaching position because without them and the lessons I learned in basketball I wouldn't be where I am today.”

"What's important to me is leading young people to do something that they've never done," she continued. "Cutting down nets is something not too many people get to do."

After leading LSU to NCAA victory last season, Mulkey signed a record 10-year, $36 million contract extension, the largest ever signed by a women’s college basketball coach.

"I am living a wonderful life,” she told Risher. “I wouldn't trade my life for anything.”
