HUNTERS WERE the earliest adopters of trail camera technology, but today the low cost and high-quality images make trail cameras useful and fun for anyone with wildlife near their home. Even city-dwelling bird watchers can use trail cameras to automatically capture footage of visitors to feeders and baths. Trail cameras also are useful as a layer of security around property. (Is it a bear, a raccoon or a person getting into your trash cans in the middle of the night?)

If you’ve been thinking about adding a motion-activated camera to your cart, Amazon’s Prime Day Early Access Sale is dropping the price on one of our favorite non-networked trail cameras, the GardePro A3. This October 11 and 12, Amazon is bringing it back to give members a chance to get a jumpstart on holiday buying.

The Expert: I’ve been using trail cameras, primarily for scouting animals for hunting, for a decade and have watched the quality climb and prices drop dramatically. I now use both cellular and non-networked trail cameras year-round as key scouting tools. Through my gear writing, I’ve tested most of the major trail camera brands at this point and am always curious about new offerings. As a landowner and general wildlife enthusiast, I also employ these cameras for security and just for the fun of seeing animals passing through when I’m not around.

I made the GardePro A3 my Best Budget Trail Camera in my review of the 9 Best Trail Cameras because it offers a great image sensor from Sony, which helps deliver high-quality images. It also has a fast trigger speed to keep animals from sneaking by, and can handle high-capacity cards so you can leave the camera for longer periods of time without running out of memory. It also delivers crisper night images (probably thanks to the Sony sensor) than many other budget trail cams without a noticeably higher price. However, it does struggle with focusing at close-range.

My main gripes with the A3 are fairly common to many trail cameras. The menu navigation and buttons are a bit confusing if you aren’t using them frequently, and there are not many options for the delay on the capture. The camera also doesn’t offer any Wi-Fi or Bluetooth image review, so you need to deal with physical cards. This limitation isn’t the end of the world, but some budget trail cameras do offer wireless image review which can be convenient when you are reviewing images often. Still, at this cut rate, you can afford to buy several of these very capable units and run multiple cameras at once to get a fuller picture of the wildlife scene in your area.
