On Valentine’s Day, New York-based fashion brand LoveShackFancy took over The Plaza Hotel to debut its Fall 2023 collection during New York Fashion Week. Presented in a gorgeous limestone room covered in roses and accompanied by a string quartet, LoveShackFancy’s latest offering features a British flair and an expansion of the brand’s outerwear and knitwear designs.

In The Know caught up with Rebecca Hessel Cohen, the founder and creative director of LoveShackFancy, on the eve of the NYFW presentation to hear about this season’s inspiration and which trends she thinks will be the next big thing. Keep scrolling to read the entire Q&A.

In The Know: What was the inspiration behind your Fall 2023 Collection?

Rebecca Hessel Cohen: We’re calling the collection “Rebel Rose.” We just opened our first international store in London, in Notting Hill, and I’ve always been inspired by Portobello Market and all the vintage. So we’re definitely very inspired by the British, when feminine meets masculine and when the uber-romantic meets menswear and suiting. We have a little nod to Savile Row tailoring and then frilly moments, of course, as is our normal LoveShack girl — but with a little bit of a twist.

There are lots of raw edges, beautiful fabrics like tulle, sequins, lace and silks, and then everything has a little bit of this shipwrecked look. [The LoveShackFancy girl is] a bit edgier this year, and she definitely is a little bit more grown-up. So we’re giving our younger girls something to aspire to and then growing with our customers and offering something for every age.

Can you pick your favorite piece or two from your new collection?

Well, one, my pink mini dress. It’s a silk chiffon sort of asymmetrical bubble. It’s the best party dress that has this fun gunmetal crystal that’s placed throughout and raw edges. It’s this fun party girl [design] but with that edge. I feel like she’s the perfect mix and really amazing. When I had sourced this original fabric and this original inspiration dress in the market in Paris that was sort of the starting point for the collection, that was the first piece that I got.

And then my other one, I would say, is the bridal gown we have, which is this sustainable bespoke dress with this beautiful handmade corset. It’s mixed with all this vintage lace and this beautiful organza flower and is my most favorite piece I’ve ever tried on. So I would say those two really speak to me. But I’m also obsessed with all the coats! There are so many amazing coats and outerwear and knitwear. Honestly, I love everything.

Why did The Plaza feel like the perfect place to debut your new collection?

I had my birthday there last year, which ended up being a really fun fashion week whole extravaganza. This time, when we were thinking about where to show [the collection], we wanted to have this sort of return where it’s about the clothes, it’s not a party— no champagne this time, no food. It’s really more about showing the evolution of the collection and the wide assortment.

We wanted something to feel old-school New York historical, which The Plaza embodies, and then mixed with a little bit of European sensibility. So we’re showing it in this all-limestone, beautiful room so that, when you walk up to the second floor, it feels very old world. It’s going to be elegant meets fun meets our [LoveShackFancy girls] traveling, seeing the world and getting out there.

What is your favorite part about NYFW?

My favorite part is seeing the energy come alive in New York and seeing it return to what I grew up with and what I always remember: everyone getting dressed and running around with the energy and excitement of parties and fashion. I feel like there are more people than ever who have come for this fashion week, so that’s super exciting. I’m from New York City, born and raised and never left, so having everyone come and be a part of it is the best part.

Which fashion trends are you most excited to see this year?

For me, and also for LoveShackFancy, [I’m excited to see] bias-cut slip dresses and a nod to some of these super chic ’90s silhouettes, which I can’t get enough of. We’ve really perfected some of these beautiful styles. Also, I would say menswear-inspired coats, too, which we’re also finally weaving into our collection. You can pair them with any of the minis or any long slip dresses or anything else. It kind of just adds that sense of cool.

Which accessories do you think will have a big moment this year?

I think platforms and bows, which we’re huge fans of. I’ve been seeing a lot of fun bows, and we are never short of bows.
