Lovesac Sactional Review: The Versatile Couch We’ve Been Waiting For

A Lovesac Sactional Review: The Sactional comes from Lovesac, the company behind the soft-as-a-cloud Sacs that are dorm-room must-haves for many rising college students. While the Sacs are relaxed and casual, Lovesac Sactionals are a little more mature and sophisticated—but just as comfortable.

From the company behind the soft-as-a-cloud beanbag Sac, the Lovesac Sactional offers the same comfort, with a grown-up aesthetic.

If you’re shopping for a new couch, you probably have a long list of must-haves—and the Lovesac Sactional probably has all of them.

Actually, forget probably: This genius, uber-functional sofa likely meets all the criteria on your list, plus it’s easy to assemble, and it can grow and change with you, even as you move or add members to your household.

The Sactional comes from Lovesac, the company behind the soft-as-a-cloud Sacs that are dorm-room must-haves for many rising college students. While the Sacs are relaxed and casual, Sactionals are a little more mature and sophisticated—but just as comfortable.

There’s a lot to love about the Sactional, but the most obvious appeal is its versatility. Each Lovesac Sactional is built around a seat and a number of sides, which serve as the arms and back. Two seats makes a loveseat; three makes a sofa. Four can make an L-shaped sectional or a deep loveseat with foot rests. A seat without sides can be an ottoman. (Lovesac even sells tables to go over the seats, so you can have a hard surface for drinks.) You can arrange the Sactional pieces endlessly, into whatever configuration suits your space and needs, and order individual pieces to add to your set, in case your latest Sactional set-up requires an extra side or even a wedge-shaped seat for a little curve.

Once you’ve found your perfect Sactional arrangement, you can further customize the look of your couch with a cover. Lovesac offers 197 cover options (with 16 available almost instantly) so you can fit the furniture to your space. The covers fit over the seats and arms, so the whole piece looks cohesive, and completely changing its look is a matter of ordering new covers for each seat and side, so the Sactional really can grow and change with you.

“I was seeing couches left on the curb or in the trash because they wouldn’t fit a new place, or someone’s tastes had changed, or they were just plain worn out,” said Lovesac Founder and CEO Shawn Nelson. “Imagining a product that could be built to last a lifetime and designed to evolve with life as it changes—that became Sactionals. We call this approach ‘Designed For Life.’”

This “Designed For Life” approach extends to Sactional’s durability. Many of the covers are machine washable, and replacing a cover that has been stained beyond repair is simple. Sactionals are also guaranteed for life, so buying one now—and adding future pieces as needed—is truly an investment.

Having received my own Lovesac Sactional starter kit (a seat and three sides, perfect for a chair), I was able to put it together—without a single tool or curse word!—easily, and the seat was immediately comfortable. Taking the chair apart to move it (which I’ve also done) is also simple, as is adding and removing covers. Each piece of the chair is bulky, which makes construction and set up tricky, but that also means the Sactionals are that much more comfortable and sturdy. I will be the first to admit that the floors in my apartment are not even, and my Sactional chair does not wobble at all.

Each piece of the chair is modular, so when it’s time to move apartments, I’ll be able to pack the chair up easily. My chair is perfect for curling up and napping in, and the arms are perfectly sized to hold books, remotes, and more. And, when I’m ready, I can expand my chair into a loveseat or a full sectional—the opportunities are endless.

Now to the downside of the Sactional: They’re pricy. Not shockingly so, but enough to make buying a Lovesac Sactional a real commitment. You’ll need to fork over a chunk of change for one—two seats, four sides, and covers for all of it start at $2,000. But if you use it for four years or more, it’s a worthy investment, especially if you move often or are constantly looking to change up your look.
