Zinnia flowers are some of the most beautiful, vibrant, and captivating blooms around. They’re bold. They’re cheerful. They’re resilient. They add bursts of color to any garden or landscape and come in various shapes, sizes, and colors from reds, oranges, and pinks to yellows and whites—and their double-layered petals are exceptional. Plus, they attract important pollinators like butterflies and bees.

Zinnias have a pretty long bloom period, which extends from late spring to the first frost. This prolonged flowering season gives gardeners the ability to have a continuous display of color, an enduring sense of beauty.

So if you just can’t get enough zinnias, you aren’t alone—and thanks to their long blooming period, you can ensure you have plenty. Just look to Chloe Grayling, or @lovechloejane on TikTok, who showed her followers how to get thousands of zinnias by starting with just one flower.

“Here’s how to turn one zinnia into 108,212 zinnias,” Grayling says in a video with more than 806,000 views, 118,000 likes, and 28,000 saves. “We’re going to start, as always, with one fresh flower. When it starts to look a bit sad, take it out of the water and let it dry. It’s properly dry when the petals sound crunchy like this.”

“Now, as zinnia seeds are hidden, and the way to find them is to gently pull out the petals,” Grayling says. “Every petal holds a seed. Every seed grows a new zinnia plant, and every zinnia plant can grow 10 or 20 or 30 beautiful new flowers. I like to remove the seeds from the petals because it saves space and because it stops any moisture damage from petals that aren’t quite dry.”

Once you have those dried out seeds, you can start planting your zinnias. They’re best when they’re planted in the spring, but you can plant them in the summer, too. Put two or three seeds in a hole—if multiple plants sprout from the same hole, remove the weakest seedlings.

Zinnias will grow anywhere, but you’ll have better luck if your soil is well-draining with a soil pH in the neutral range.

“As with all of the flowers growing from seeds that we save, I recommend leaving a few flowers on to dry out and gather seeds from because these are really nice, strong, beautiful seeds that will grow very healthy plants in the future,” Grayling says.

People love zinnias because they are easy to care for, so you won't be overwhelmed by having dozens or hundreds of plants. They thrive in well-drained soil under full sunlight, but are adaptable to various climates and can be grown both in the ground and in containers, making them suitable all kinds of gardeners.

Grayling similar videos often, with the purpose of getting exactly what you want without having to break the bank. For instance, she’s created videos on growing hundreds of cosmos flowers, thousands of poppies and sunflowers, and more.
