'We love it.' See inside this couple's dream 4-bed, 3,500-square-foot home in La Grange

Joseph and Ruth Misagal were already living in the La Grange area when they decided it was time for a slightly bigger place.

“We always entertain visitors — (for) every gathering (and) birthday party,” Joseph told The Courier Journal. “(But) our house was so small.”

He added that their former home was a new build, and they were hoping to construct their next place from the ground up as well. The Misagals soon discovered Fischer Homes, which creates new home-building experiences in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Northern Kentucky, and Louisville.

Though Joseph and Ruth toyed with the idea of moving to Louisville, they ultimately decided to stay in La Grange — and picked the Blair floor plan from Fischer Homes’ Designer collection.

“It was during COVID … that we built this house,” Joseph recalled. “It took a year to get (it) completed.”

Joseph and Ruth received weekly updates on the progress of their new house. Regular texts and emails with the Fischer team kept them in the loop until they were finally able to move into their brand-new, four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom abode.

The Misagal’s chosen floor plan already incorporated certain features that Joseph and Ruth were excited about, such as a large recreation room ideal for entertaining, as well as a primary suite with a sitting room and dual walk-in closets.

“(And) we always wanted a house with a high ceiling,” Joseph added, “so that was a priority.”

There were a plethora of ways he and Ruth could customize their new home — selections had to be made for roofing, paint colors, flooring options, wall finishes, doors, and more. During their second meeting with the Fischer Homes team, Joseph was ready to make his picks.

“I watched a lot of YouTube (videos about) upgrades,” he said, adding that they opted for several upgraded options throughout the house, with special attention given to the high ceilings, bathroom enhancements, and the building itself. “(We focused on) more on the structure — (things) that you cannot fix once you’ve already moved in.”

Modern and minimal

Joseph said that the construction slowdowns of the pandemic worked out in their favor because it gave them a chance to put a lot of thought into the home’s interior design. The extra time allowed them to shop for decor that would fit into their aesthetic.

Almost every day after work, Joseph would drive down to the site to view the home’s progress and envision what kinds of furniture pieces would make the space come alive.

“Me and my wife were thinking minimalist,” he said. “(We wanted to keep it) simple … and I said I want our living room to be a combination of white and gold.”

Large, plush white sofas now adorn their main living space, with pops of gold present in accessories and accent pillows. A similar color scheme flows into the kitchen and dining room, with most of the spaces a clean white hue with hints of gold throughout.

The Misagals’ living room offers ample seating for friends and family, but there are a couple of other areas that were created specifically for entertaining. The first is the home theater, otherwise known as Joseph’s favorite space. It boasts an 80-inch TV and is decked out with movie posters.

“(The sofa) has a built-in speaker and subwoofer,” Joseph said, “so when you’re watching (TV), it vibrates.”

Downstairs, the large finished basement also features lots of cozy seating, as well as a bar, kitchenette, and a karaoke machine.

“We always hang out here and sing karaoke with that fancy mic,” Joseph said with a laugh. “And then we grill outside.”

Though the Misagals built this house with the sole purpose of having more room to entertain, Joseph said he had no idea they’d end up with a home that was quite so large.

“We only have one son — and he’s in college — so we don’t really need (a lot of space),” he said. “We didn’t really expect to build a big house like this — but we love it.”
