Love Letter is the best party card game you’ve never heard of — it’s under $15, and I can’t stop talking about it

As far as holiday gifting goes, one of the easiest and safest gifts to give is a party card game. And, wow, do I have one to tell you about. It’s called Love Letter, and it’s the best.

My family and I first stumbled upon what has since become The Greatest Game of All Time™ over the summer at a beach house we rented. It was rainy, and we were desperate to play a game that wasn’t a variation of poker or spoons. After looking all over the house, we found the strategy-focused Love Letter — and our lives forever changed. All any of us do now is eat, breathe, drink and sleep Love Letter.

The point of the game is simple. Just get your love letter to the Princess while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. And, just like any good party card game, it gets wildly competitive. You are, after all, competing for love.

Amazon shoppers have given Love Letter an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars review based on over 3,000 ratings.

The game itself features a deck of 27 cards and a handful of “favor” tokens that come in the cutest velvet pouch. Each card features a number 0 through 9 and a specific character, as well as instructions for the card’s play. Other than the Princess, characters include a Guard, King, Handmaid, Chancellor and Spy(!) — all of which do different things. The best part? The instructions for gameplay are literally on the card. So easy!

To set up, shuffle the deck, deal one card to each player and leave the rest of the pile in the middle. The first player then draws a card and can then play one of two cards in their hand. The game then progresses in rounds, with each player using their chosen card’s abilities to knock others out of the game or get closer to the Princess. Whoever successfully gets their letter to the Princess wins a “favor” token. Collect the most, and you win the game.

I mean, you’ve got love, you’ve got drama, you’ve got strategy, you’ve got a spy and you’ve got a princess. The only people who won’t like this game are people who just hate to have a good time.

Since first playing Love Letter over the summer, my family has found a way to bring it up in every possible conversation. We’ve forced every guest who stepped into our home that summer to play the game and join our Love Letter fandom. My fiancé even bought my brother’s girlfriend her own deck as a birthday gift. She cried actual tears — and then so did we. Truly the best gift ever.

I promise I’m not exaggerating about how fun this game is. Amazon shoppers have given it an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars review based on over 3,000 ratings. And it is hard to win over those notoriously ruthless Amazon reviewers.

“A perfect ‘fits in your pocket’ strategy game,” wrote one Amazon reviewer. “Love that the rules are really simple and quick to learn. However, there are deeper strategy and mind games to be had the longer you play”

“I taught my roommate and his girlfriend how to play, I taught a group of hyper weird skate punks to play and I even managed to teach my grandmother how to play,” explained another Amazon reviewer. “They all loved either the cutthroat political aspects or simple luck of the draw or stellar mind read leading to quick and easy scores.”

So, yeah. I highly recommend that you grab Love Letter for yourself, your family, your friends and your coworkers as a holiday gift this year. Love Letter is the best!! Live, laugh, Love Letter!
