Lourdes Leon Walked the Runway at Gypsy Sport

She wore a beaded body-chain bra, low-cut ripped jeans, and a headpiece made of leaves.

The Gypsy Sport show offered a spiritual awakening in the middle of Fashion Week. The show opened with a moment of silence and contemplation in honor of the victims of 9/11, and was followed by a parade of FernGully fairy children of varying shapes, sizes, and ages, all dressed up in designer Rio Uribe’s Mother Earth–meets–urban goddess clothes. Among them, a very special sprite stood out. Lourdes Leon, daughter of Madonna, walked the runway wearing a beaded shell body-chain bra, low-slung ripped jeans, and a headpiece made from bright green leaves. Minuscule sunglasses were perched on the tip of her nose and she was laser focused, seeming to take it all in and, as we were all instructed to do at the start of the show, find inner peace.

This was her first time walking the runway in New York, too, though she has modeled recently for the Converse x MadeMe collaboration and is fast becoming a style star to watch.

Though she knows the fashion game by now, her casting did not come about via the traditional route. According to Uribe, Leon reached out to him personally and asked if she could walk in his runway. A friend of Uribe’s and the brand, she clearly stands behind the strong progressive messaging that underpinned the show, which was one of the standouts of New York Fashion Week thus far. In the last several days, we’ve seen reality TV stars sitting front row and watched musicians duke it out on the red carpet. No sensational news story or big-name beef here, though, just a cool downtown New Yorker, doing it all her own way.
