At last night's Proenza Schouler show, Lourdes Leon finally made her first appearance this season at New York Fashion Week. Along a star-studded front row that included models Suki Waterhouse and Emily Ratajkowski, 21-year-old Leon—who was recently featured as a rebel schoolgirl in a campaign for accessories label MadeMe—wore her signature white ribbed tank, along with a pair of short shorts and kicky white booties.

Yet, this fashion moment is not so much about what Leon is wearing, but rather where she is. In the past, Leon’s fashion week appearances have been mostly in support of bubbling underground designers. Last year, for Spring 2018, she modeled in the Gypsy Sport presentation wearing a body chain and oversize shredded jeans. She’s friends with Raul Lopez of the downtown-beloved label Luar, and has worn his designs in the past, too. When she did attend a show back in 2016, it was the Alexander Wang Spring 2017 collection alongside her mother Madonna.

This is the first time that Leon has attended a show as a guest solo—and where better to start than Proenza Schouler? As one of the hottest tickets on the New York Fashion Week schedule, the label's precise cuts and elevated sensibility mark an interesting new chapter for Leon. At the moment, her style is evocative of artfully wild youth; think plenty of shorts and tanks. And while we love her laid-back signatures, seeing her in some more sophisticated Proenza pieces in the near future would make for a fabulous shake-up. Watch this space.
