Louisiana National Guard Unit celebrates Mardi Gras in Poland

Mardi Gras came to Poland this year thanks to a unit of the Louisiana National Guard.

Sgt. Maj. Verdis Walker is a Haughton native, a senior enlisted advisor for the 773rd MP Bn and the creator of the first-ever Mardi Gras event at U.S. Army Garrison Camp Kosciuszko, Poznan Poland, The home of V Corps Headquarters (Forward) and U.S. Army Garrison Poland Headquarters.

The celebration, held on Feb. 9, included a parade with decked-out Humvees, and a “Taste of Louisiana” event, where soldiers cooked up their best local foods like gumbo and king cake and shared it with the local children and other service members.
