Lou Williams catches fire, drops 50 points on Warriors in Clippers win

There was a lot of buzz around the Golden State Warriors ahead of their Wednesday matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The day started with news that Stephen Curry suffered an ankle injury and was going to miss the game.

With Curry out, the stage was set for Kevin Durant, who delivered with a big first half to become the second-youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points.

But in the end, the night belonged to Clippers guard Lou Williams, who caught fire to the tune of a career-high 50 points as Los Angeles rolled to a 125-106 win over Golden State at Oracle Arena.

“Somewhere in that third quarter, I was able to get three 15-foot jumpers in a row,” Williams told ESPN after the game. “I just felt like I could make any shot after that.”

Williams did a lot of his damage from distance, hitting 8-of-16 3-pointers. He was perfect from the line, hitting all 10 of his free throws while tallying 16-of-27 field-goal attempts. He added seven assists for good measure.

His 26-point third quarter is the highest-scoring quarter by a player in the NBA this year.

It was a remarkable performance, one that upstaged Durant, who scored 40 points of his own on his milestone night.

“For me, I was just excited we were going to get a win at Golden State,” Williams told ESPN. “I don’t know the last time I’ve been able to come into this building and leave with a win.”
