Los Angeles Is Getting the Country’s First Cannabis Cafe — and It’s Not Serving ‘Stoner Food’

The country’s first legal cannabis cafe is set to open in Los Angeles on Oct. 1.

Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe has nabbed an enviable rooftop location in West Hollywood, where they will become the country’s first “farm-to-table restaurant highlighting cuisine and cannabis,” according to a statement.

The kitchen is helmed by Chef Andrea Drummer, trained at Le Cordon Bleu, who has created a menu to accompany the cannabis strains on offer at the cafe. Typical stoner food this is not. The California-inspired menu has dishes “meant to complement the heightened senses from cannabis consumption.” Guests will be able to choose from dishes like grilled peaches and burrata, crispy brussels sprouts or a fried chicken sandwich.

The cafe won’t have THC or CBD flavors built into the dishes. Rather, diners will be able to experience “tableside flower service.” The “flower hosts” will work something like a sommelier, who will come to the table to explain each strain’s flavors and effects. They will even roll you a joint. Guests who prefer their cannabis consumption in a form other than “puff puff pass,” can partake in options like dabs and bongs.

Marketing materials for the restaurant have an old-time feel and invite guests to celebrate “the end of prohibition.” It’s been more than 100 years since marijuana clubs — called “tea pads” — were legal in America. (Marijuana was made illegal in the U.S. in 1937.)

Because this is the first of its kind in the country, there are a few rules that Lowell Cafe has to abide by. Although it is open until 2 a.m., there will be a “last call” for cannabis products at 9:50 p.m. However, if you wish to smoke later, you can “preorder” and smoke until the cafe closes.

In order to enter, guests must be aged 21 or older and will need identification. The restaurant only takes cash for cannabis products, although you can pay for food or drink with a credit or debit card.

The cafe will also feature a “dispensary” area where guests can pick up take-homes like edibles, vapes, concentrate and bud.
