In their 2024 NFL schedule announcement, the Los Angeles Chargers included a reference to Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker amid the controversy surrounding a commencement address he recently gave in Kansas. The Los Angeles Chargers included a sly reference to the recent controversy surrounding Harrison Butker while revealing the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2024 NFL season.

The kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs has come under fire over the last several days for a commencement address he delivered on May 11 at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts school in Atchinson, Kan. While many of his comments stirred controversy, most of the criticism surrounded his suggestion that women graduates were more excited to start families than embrace career opportunities after completing college.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker told the graduating class. He went on to say that his wife’s life “truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” and that he was “on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.”

Several people have spoken out against Butker’s comments in the days since he delivered his commencement address. The NFL also released a statement on Wed., May 15, stating that Butker’s comments were delivered “in his personal capacity” and that his views “are not those of the NFL as an organization.”

On Wed., May 15, the Chargers issued its own humorous response to Butker’s graduation speech while unveiling the team’s schedule for the upcoming season. In a Sims-styled video shared on social media, the Chargers depicted players from other teams while revealing who they will be playing for the first several weeks of the season.

While a Sims version of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made an appearance as the Chargers noted the two teams will be battling it out on the field during Week 4, Butker came into the mix later—at the 2:55 mark—as the video showed a split screen featuring a scrolling week-by-week schedule. On the other side of the screen was a man dressed in a red #7 Chiefs jersey—Butker’s number on the team.

In his cameo, the Sims version of Butker appeared in a kitchen as he bent down to place a pie in an oven. He later seemed to be scrubbing a countertop next to a kitchen sink and organizing flowers into a bouquet.

Many people on social media interpreted the inclusion of Butker as seen in the Sims kitchen as a direct reference to the comments he made to Benedictine’s graduating class.

“They put Harrison Butker in he kitchen cooking & cleaning ,” an NFL Memes account on X, formerly Twitter, noted while sharing the clip from the video that featured the Sims version of Butker.

“Not only did the #Chargers have Harrison Butker cooking in the kitchen, they also had him cleaning in their schedule release video,” a football news account tweeted.

“A man’s life doesn’t begin until he’s absolutely bodied in the Chargers’ schedule release video,” an NFL analyst tweeted.
