Everyone's curious about the Lori Vallow trial now that Sins of Our Mother is gearing up for its premiere.
The latest true crime doc on Netflix, Skye Borgman's September release follows the story of an Idaho woman known as "the most notorious mom in the US." But how did her seemingly picture-perfect family life shatter so quickly?
When Vallow crossed paths with her fifth husband, prolific doomsday author, Chad Daybell, everything changed. A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vallow began to believe in Daybell's apocalyptic theory and the fact that he can detect good verses evil spirits.
When Vallow's children had gone missing in 2019, it became national news. In 2020, sadly, 7-year-old J.J. Vallow and his older sister, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, were discovered in shallow graves in Daybell's Idaho backyard.
Daybell and Vallow face several charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder. If you've asked, "Where is Lori Vallow now and what happens next," matters are grim.
The Lori Vallow trial
The Lori Vallow trial is expected to begin in Ada County, Idaho, on January 9, 2023 and will likely wrap up some time in March, per Idaho News 6.
Initially, the trial was set to begin in October 2022, however, Judge Steven Boyce approved a motion to move her trial alongside Daybell's to prevent an improper severance. Additionally, an 'extraordinary volume' of material had been discovered.
According to a statement by Judge Boyce, "The Indictment charges Defendant and Daybell with the most serious of crimes. They are alleged to have co-conspired to commit murder, and the State has filed its notice of intent to seek the death penalty in both cases. In addition, there are allegations of conspiracy to commit multiple financial crimes."

Vallow has returned to prison after a stay with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare for mental health treatment. In 2021, she was deemed unable to stand trial. As of April 2022, she is competent to stand trial.
As of September 2022, NBC News reports that the Judge is considering allowing cameras in the courtroom during the 2023 trial. A group of media outlets, including the Associated Press, came together to ask Judge Boyce to reject a request to ban cameras. Vallow’s attorneys had made the request to do away with cameras, claiming in "abused the privilege to videotape the proceedings when it repeatedly zoomed in on Vallow’s face."
Steven Wright, the attorney representing the news outlets, says otherwise.
"The public’s confidence in the criminal justice system grows when the courtroom is open to all, including those who cannot physically attend,” Wright said in a statement. "We reject any claim that the media has failed to comply with the court’s orders balancing the rights of Ms. Daybell with the transparency necessary to serve the public interest."
