Lorde Reportedly Turned Down an Offer to Perform at the 2018 Grammy Awards

The 2018 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place tonight, January 28, and among the excitement over the performers, some people are wondering about the artists that aren't going to appear onstage.

Lorde, for example, is up for the prestigious Album of the Year award, but reportedly will not be performing at the event. According to Variety, the singer-songwriter was offered a spot on the performance list, but not solo. A source told the outlet that Lorde was asked to take part in a Tom Petty tribute, along with other artists. Lorde, in turn, allegedly declined.

Variety's source also said that the rest of the Album of the Year nominees (who are all male) were offered solo performance spots. To that end, as Variety points out, Lorde's mother, Sonja Yelich, recently tweeted a photo of a New York Times article that states: "Of the 899 people to be nominated for Grammy awards in the past six years, only 9% were women." Along with the article, Yelich added: "This says it all."

Reps for the Grammys and for Lorde did not respond to Variety when contacted for comment. However, when asked about being the only female nominee for Album of the Year, Lorde told Billboard: "It’s crazy I’m the only woman in my category, and I feel very proud of that. I’m wearing that mantle for sure. But I’m also stoked that I’m in there with four incredible artists of color — it’s a big moment for the Grammys. It’s exciting when these institutions move in the right way. To me, that is a huge victory."
