Say it ain't so, a sweet go-to snack may soon be replaced.

It seems like there’s nothing we can’t find at Costco’s food court. Between the soft-serve fro-yo and the $1.50 hot dog combo, we’re usually pretty happy customers when we’re there. And don’t even get us started about the food courts in other countries with poutine in Canada and croquetas found in Spain.

So when we hear rumors that the mega-retailer might be doing away with a beloved sweet treat, it has us feeling a bit conflicted—and we’re not the only ones.

Churros May Be Leaving Costco Food Court

In a recent Reddit thread, one user claimed their brother was a Costco employee and told them the churros would soon be a thing of the past for Costco’s food court and may be replaced with cookies.

Another user commented on the post saying, “It is true. They have found a company to make the cookies, agreements are finalized. They will be showing up in early 2024, along with chocolate ice cream which will appear before summer.”

The churros have become somewhat of a staple in the Costco food court so naturally many are upset to hear they may no longer be available. “I just got a Costco membership this year, and I have been enjoying the churros,” said one user while another said getting a hot dog and churro for their son was special and will be missed: “This is going to really suck for our Costco shopping routine.”

However, while many are upset over this possible change, some welcome it. On the same Reddit thread, more than a few users said the churros are “too bready and weird” and that “the current churros are terrible.” Another user expressed they were excited about something new: "This will be a positive change. People will swarm for cookies vs bad churros” with others on the thread agreeing.

Why Costco Changed the Original Churros Recipe

This possible removal could have something to do with the fact that the churro has changed over the years. The large fried dough stick sprinkled with cinnamon sugar used to go for $1 before the pandemic but after it changed its recipe, and its price—upping it to $1.49.

Comments on the Reddit thread addressed this change, too, saying “The old churros were soooo good idk why they ever switched” and “Costco churros are more like twisted cinnamon sugar burnt shrapnel. They used to be delicious.”

These latest claims about the churros being discontinued haven’t been verified by Costco so they could simply be just rumors. Guess we will have to wait until the New Year to see if the churros stay or if new cookie options will fill their place. Either way, we can always help you make them at home.
