The teaser trailer for director Zack Synder’s new film drew eight million views in less than half a day. There’s clearly buzz around Rebel Moon, and if what we’ve seen is anything to go by, this might be Netflix’s biggest hit of 2023.

The sci-fi epic has all of Synder’s calling cards: gratuitous slow-mo, glittering special effects, and a gargantuan cast of Hollywood heavyweights. You’d expect no less from the director of 300, Man of Steel, Justice League, and Army of the Dead.

There's even a mobile tie-in. Zack Snyder has revealed more details on the Rebel Moon video game.

Sofia Boutella stars as Kora, a freedom fighter helping the peaceful residents of a planet revolt against an authoritarian government. Alongside her are Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, E. Duffy and Djimon Hounsou, and Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, who plays a robot named Jimmy.

As per the official synopsis: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.” Seven Samurai in space. It’s hard to go wrong with that.

Rebel Moon isn’t the only offering from Synder, however. It’s part one of a two-part movie he’s been developing for years. Originally, he pitched it as a Star Wars movie before deciding it was better off as a solo project.

Rebel Moon hits Netflix December 22, while its follow-up, called The Scargiver, arrives in April.
