December's spectacular full moon, known as the Cold Moon, will shine brightly on Thursday 12th December. It's the final full moon of 2019, so be sure not to miss it.

The full moon will become full on 12/12 at 12:12 a.m. — a strange coincidence for the last moon of the year. The best time to catch it is late Wednesday night.

Why is December's full moon called the Cold Moon?

December's Cold Moon gets its name from the drop in temperature during the winter months. The moon has also been known by some Europeans as the "Moon Before Yule," as a festive reference to the beginning of the Christmas.

"Ancient people across Europe and North America kept track of time by naming each full moon after a feature associated with that season. December’s full moon brought with it the signs of winter in the Northern Hemisphere such as the cold weather and the longer nights hence the name Cold Moon or Long Night Moon as it’s also been called," Tania tells us.

According to Space.com, December's full moon will also "be joined in the sky by the planets Venus and Saturn, which will be close together after reaching a conjunction on 11th December." Fingers crossed the weather stays dry so we can get the best views.

The next full moon, the Wolf Moon, will be seen in the sky around early January 2020.
