Look Inside: A New York Co-Op That’s Equal Parts Cozy and Cheery

Now that November is here — and everyone has seemingly torn down Halloween decorations and cued up holiday music overnight — I’m doing everything I can to hold onto fall for just a little longer. As much as I love hunkering down with a throw blanket and a virtual fireplace, I also enjoy leaving the office before the sun has set and walking around wearing a light jacket. So something about seeing this one-bedroom co-op was like medicine for the part of me that wants to hold off on winter mode for a while longer.

It’s hard to explain, but look at the listing photos for yourself. The natural sunlight streaming through the gauzy white curtains? Bliss. The warm wood accents? So cozy. And the white walls, tiling, and recessed lighting are the perfect amount of modern.

When you step through the front door, you enter the main living space right away. At the far end, you’ll find an open living area with almost a full wall of built-ins, which you can fill with books (color-coded, facing spine-in, or some other orientation you dream up) or knickknacks and small objets d’art from your travels.

Where the hardwood gives way to tiled floors, the living area ends and the kitchen begins. It’s petite, but offers a full-size stainless fridge, electric stovetop, oven, and dishwasher. A butcher block-topped island creates a wide swath of prep space, and offsets the bright modernity of the honeycomb tile backsplash, along with clean-lined mid-century modern cabinets.

The bedroom keeps things simple, too, though you could easily jazz it up with a heavy dose of color. To me, it’s not lackluster at all, though. Hardwood floors, off-white walls, and 10-plus-foot ceilings define the room, and on one wall, a bank of wooden cabinets surrounds a big window. There’s something a little old-school and a little mid-century that I love about them — it goes to show how little it can take to give a space a big sense of personality.
