What to look out for when choosing childcare

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — When you’re a relatively new parent, deciding on a daycare center for your little one is a daunting task. So, how do you choose the right childcare center, and where do you start?

At the age of 19, Amber Jayne started teaching preschool. A few years later, she opened up her own preschool.

“It’s been the biggest best journey I could have asked for,” she said.

Jayne, a mom turned CEO of Loving Start Learning Center and early childhood development expert, is the owner of nearly 10 preschool centers sharing the following advice for parents in deciding high-quality care for their child.

Jayne first said to ask around. Talk to other parents who you know and trust, and find out where they send their kids.

She also said that when you have several appointments scheduled and walk into the daycare center, ask yourself what are you hearing. Is it fun music, kids laughing, or do you hear teachers engaging with the students?

“When you walk into a classroom and the teachers ignore you, do not make eye contact, that is a huge red flag. You want the child to be with teachers and educators who greet you and kneel down and say hello to your child,” Jayne said.

She said you want to feel that your child is in a warm and welcoming place.

If the school and or classrooms are super cluttered, dirty and unorganized, she said that’s another red flag,

“If you can see the clutter, imagine what’s going on behind the scenes that they are not getting done. Like are they  taking care of safety issues, or state paperwork,” she said.

If you’re in the business and want to open up your own preschool, she’s got a podcast and a book with tips.
