Look What the Cats Trailer Dragged In

Tag yourself I'm Bombalurina.

Cats comes from the mind of the Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Webber (he of Evita and Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat fame), and under the direction of The King's Speech's Tom Hooper, the movie version of the maudlin musical is fast-approaching, like a hockey puck sliding across the ice, incapable of changing course, careening towards you at throttling speed. It stars Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, and a metric ton of CGI fur. The Lion King live-action reboot is, in no uncertain terms, shaking. The Cats trailer is—we must inform you—here, now.

So. Lots going on in said Cats trailer. Per IMDb: "A tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life." In case you're wondering, Corden's titular cat is called Bustopher Jones. Swift herself is playing Bombalurina. We're not saying that the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt parody of Cats in the show's final season was perfect by any means, but when a spoof is delivering more compelling material than the actual thing itself... well, per the trailer itself (emphasis our own), "This holiday seaosn, you will believe." Consider us warned!

Cats—based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, natch—hits theaters on December 20, 2019. Consider us ready to hear the phrase "Jason Derulo IS... Rum Tum Tugger" spoken aloud, frequently, for the next five months.
