Look Back ... to Roger Milroy on the job as Chamber manager, 1948

Nov. 1—Nov. 1, 1948, in The Star: His first full day on the job as manager of the Anniston Chamber of Commerce found blond, efficient young Roger Milroy assuming his duties in an optimistic frame of mind, coupled with awareness of the many problems confronting him. "I hope no one imagines," said the four-year Army Special Services veteran, "that all problems can or should be attempted to be solved overnight. It is better in the long run to be conservative rather than to jump off half-cocked without giving full consideration to all details. This is particularly true, I feel, in plans for industrial expansion." Also this date: Complete returns from the 1948 presidential election will be broadcast over radio station WHMA tomorrow night beginning at 6:30, in cooperation with The Anniston Star. The combined staffs of WHMA and The Star will assemble the returns in Calhoun County and will get them out to listeners as soon as possible. National news organizations, such as the Associated Press, United Press and NBC, will contribute their coverage of returns outside Calhoun County. The returns will be broadcast directly from the newsroom of The Anniston Star, located on 11th Street across from the courthouse.

Nov. 1, 1998, in The Star: The children who are volunteering to help Ralph Bradford win Tuesday's election in District 32 say that everyone has their own style of political campaigning. Bradford, a Republican, is challenging Democratic incumbent Barbara Boyd for the District 32 state Legislature seat. And in District 35, Larry Sims, a Republican, will run against a former Talladega County Commissioners, Steve Hurst, a Democrat.
