Look Back ... to no school west of Anniston, 1949

Feb. 27—Feb. 27, 1949, in The Star: R. E. "Buster" Hogan of Talladega, photographer for the Birmingham News — Age-Herald, addressed members of the YMCA Camera Club and their guests recently. He related several amusing and interesting stories experienced in his so-far 18-month career as a news photographer. Another guest at the session was Murphy Cole, superintendent of Anniston Memorial Hospital, who briefly outlined the hospital's use of photography in the recruitment and training of nurses. Also this date: The Calhoun County Board of Education will not be building a new high school in the region west of Anniston due to lack of money, it was decided at a recent meeting of the board. The board has on hand $700,000 for construction and/or capital improvements, which is not enough to build a new school and still carry out projects needed at other public schools in the county. A state committee had recommended the new school be built.

Feb. 27, 1999, in The Star: The Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce yesterday chose Duane Higgins to be its next president. Higgins, 38, who will take over the group's lead staff job March 15, is currently district director for U.S. Rep. Bob Riley, R-Ashland. According to Alabama Power's Ken Deal, a member of the search committee, Higgins "has a high energy level and is able to work with people." The previous president, who was shown the door after less than 15 months, did not.
