Look Back ... to another edition of the Forest Lane block party, 1998

Oct. 3—Oct. 3, 1948, in The Star: A number of residential real estate listings today are actually accompanied by prices — that doesn't happen all the time. There's a 3-bedroom, two-bath brick home with a large sun parlor, dining room, kitchen, playroom and a laundry space in the basement; it has hardwood floors and a forced hot air heating system operated by gas — it's priced at $14,500 (no specific address is given, just "east side"). On East 22nd Street, "a fine home built of the best material" is listed for $11,500, while a large two-bath home in good condition along Quintard Avenue, in walking distance of town, is being offered for $10,500. The buyer who needs something cheaper can pick from several homes, each with five rooms and one bath, in the four-figure range. Also this date: In social news, Mr. and Mrs. David Pitts Douglas announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret Ann, to Joseph Alexander Porteous of Montgomery, the marriage ceremony to take place in late fall. Additionally: Charles Miller, a 1940 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, has bought the feed, seed and fertilizer portion of a local firm known as Farm Equipment Company. Mr. Miller's business will be known as Charles Miller Feed and Seed, located at 119 West 10th Street. Mr. Miller, a veteran of the war, has been operating a feed and seed store in Piedmont.

Oct. 3, 1998, in The Star: On a recent Sunday afternoon the families living on and near Forest Lane in Anniston "took over" Hamilton Park for another annual block party. Flipping burgers and dogs while listening to Tracy Tyler's steel drum band, ace grillers Jim Campbell, Charlie Cooper, Bud Willet and Jim Morgan worked under the able direction of head chef Ed Wade. Mack Huckaby took figurative applause for providing an inflatable "moonwalk" for the kids. David and Nikki Christian strolled over with daughter Hannah, age 14 months, while 10-month-old Ross Svensen took in the scene wide-eyed with his parents, Missy and Rob, his sister Megan and brother Alex. Introducing their infant twins, Harris and Hinton, to east side conviviality were proud parents Wendi and Bud Owsley.
