Look: Avalanches Are Still Being Set Off Out West

It is true that avalanche danger is low in many places, but you still have to be careful. According to the Colorado Avalanche Info Center, "a small skier-triggered wet avalanche from Berthoud Pass on Tuesday. These small avalanches could be problematic in steep, high-consequence terrain.was posted as well. Throughout most of the state, most steep slopes are safe from avalanches. This doesn't mean that ALL slopes are safe. In fact, we have heard of a few isolated but potentially dangerous avalanches over the last few days." A photo of a recent skier-triggered we slide was posted as well.

According to the center, "One of these avalanches was on a northeast-facing slope on Mount Justice near the town of Marble (sorry no good pics yet). During a period of heavy rain on Thursday, a very large avalanche released naturally. Other observations from around Crested Butte point to a few large avalanches triggered by cornice fall. The good news is that if you avoid steep slopes with large overhanging cornices, and if you avoid steep slopes during periods of moderate to heavy rain, you can greatly reduce your risk of avalanches. Keep these two things in mind this weekend, especially in the Southern Mountains where more rain is expected. As always in the spring, start early, end early, and monitor how deep you sink into the snowpack. If surface crusts melt and you are sinking in past your ankles, it's time to stay away from steep slopes. Please go to colorado.gov/avalanche for more details."

Being alert is never a bad thing. Stay safe out there as you try to get a few more laps in before the season wraps up.
