Look ahead: Dates for Groundhog Day, daylight saving time and the first day of spring 2024
Although we’re still in the throes of winter, it’s not a bad idea to look ahead at some important seasonal dates coming up soon and mark them down on your calendar.
If you’re already wondering when Punxsutawney Phil will make an appearance, when winter will end and when it’ll be time to change clocks again, we’ve got you covered.
When is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day is observed annually on Feb. 2.
This year, Groundhog Day will be on Friday, Feb. 2, but because it is not a federal holiday, operations will continue as normal.
If the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, sees his shadow next month, we’ll be in store for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we’ll have an early spring to look forward to, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
In case you’re wondering, Phil saw his shadow last year, predicting a longer winter.
When is daylight saving time in 2024?
Daylight saving time, commonly – but incorrectly – referred to as “daylight savings time,” will occur on Sunday, March 10, this year. Clocks will spring forward one hour to 3 a.m. once the short hand strikes 2 a.m., according to TimeandDate.com.
This change will be in effect until Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 a.m., when clocks are scheduled to fall back to 1 a.m.
When is the first day of spring in 2024?
On average, winter lasts for 89 days in the Northern Hemisphere, according to TimeandDate.com.
Winter began on Thursday, Dec. 21, also known as the winter solstice, and will end on Tuesday, March 19, when spring begins.
Spring typically lasts 92.8 days in the Northern Hemisphere, meaning we’ll be enjoying April showers and May flowers until the first day of summer on Thursday, June 20, also known as the summer solstice, according to Almanac.
