The Longest Ski Tunnel In The World

Austria is home to the world's longest ski tunnel at Silvretta Montafon Ski Area.

Before I give you any stats on this infrastructural beast (videos are more fun than numbers, I know), I'm going to direct you towards this clip documenting the tunnel. It's a seriously big boy.

While this tunnel isn't as exciting as a water slide that permits speeds of 60+ miles per hour, the video is less about the thrill and more about the architectural marvel on display.

This brings us to a subject I was putting off: numbers time.

The tunnel at Silvretta Montafon is 476 meters, or, in American, 1558 feet. For context, that's more than twice the length of Snowbird, Utah's Peruvian Tunnel.

This world-record tunnel is part of a 7.5-mile-long ski run, the longest in Austria's Vorarlberg.

After spending the past few seasons riding dinky two-seaters here in Montana, I tend to forget the scale of large-scale destination resorts. I mean, 7.5 miles? What?

On a run that long, you'd have enough to call your mom, file your taxes, think about your place in the universe, and, if you weren't skiing too fast, read the first three sentences of Ulysses. Talk about marathon skiing.
