Long-Closed Washington Ski Hill Officially Opens For The Season

Late last week, a miracle happened—Hurricane Ridge, Washington, a small non-profit operated hill on the Olympic Peninsula, opened for the first time this ski season after a long road of promising forecasts that didn't quite pan out.

Hurricane Ridge kicked things off with two of its three surface lifts running, and thanks to a recent storm that blanketed the mountains of Washington with fresh snow, the conditions looked stellar.

"Should be an epic, but late start to the season," Hurricane Ridge wrote on Instagram.

In a somewhat unconventional move, Hurricane Ridge has remained on standby season long—instead of throwing in the towel—waiting for the storm that would provide enough snow for opening day.

Typically, Hurricane Ridge remains open through the end of March, although the ski area hasn't shared when they plan to close this season.

After opening weekend, Hurricane Ridge shared a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came to enjoy the snow.

"From whoever, to you, each and every one of us does this for you and all the future people to come like you," the resort wrote on Instagram. "Keeping winter sports alive, affordable, and available on the Olympic Peninsula is our dream and you made it come true today. Thank you!"
